What Is This Tool?

The rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign occupied by the ecliptic degree that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology, the sun sign (birth date) is interpreted as "who you are," the moon sign (the Moon's position at birth) as "your inner emotions," and the rising sign as "how you come across to others/your first impression."

Unlike the sun sign, the rising sign depends not only on the date but also on your birth time and your birthplace's latitude/longitude — because the Earth completes a rotation on its axis roughly every 24 hours, the rising sign changes on average about every 2 hours, which is why knowing your birth time to the minute matters.

The calculation is based on the standard spherical trigonometry formula that finds the ecliptic degree crossing the eastern horizon, using the RAMC (Right Ascension of the Midheaven) value derived from the local apparent sidereal time at your moment of birth, the latitude of your birthplace, and the Earth's axial tilt (obliquity) on that date.

How the calculation works

First, the Greenwich Apparent Sidereal Time (GAST) at your moment of birth is calculated, and your birthplace's longitude is added to get the local apparent sidereal time (LST); LST multiplied by 15 gives the RAMC (Right Ascension of the Midheaven). The classic formula is then applied using the true obliquity of the ecliptic on that date: tan(Ascendant) = cos(RAMC) / [-(sin(RAMC)·cos(ε) + tan(latitude)·sin(ε))], where ε is the obliquity.

Why can't the rising sign be calculated from birth date alone?

The rising sign depends on the Earth's rotation on its axis (a full rotation roughly every 24 hours), so two people born on the same day can have different rising signs if they were born at different times or in different locations. A reliable result can't be calculated without a known birth time.

What if I don't know my exact birth time?

The rising sign changes on average about every 2 hours, so an uncertainty of even a few hours can produce a different sign. If your birth certificate or hospital records list a time, use that; otherwise, treat the result as an approximate indication.

How accurate is the calculation?
