Because of its orbit around the Earth, the Moon moves about 13° per day on average and passes from one sign to the next roughly every 2-3 days — so if your birth time falls near a sign boundary (you were born on a day the Moon was changing signs), the result depends on knowing your precise birth time. This tool calculates the Moon's true geocentric ecliptic longitude at your moment of birth using the open-source astronomy-engine library (per its documentation, validated against NOVAS/JPL Horizons with sub-arcminute accuracy for lunar position). What Is This Tool?

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon's position on the ecliptic at the moment you were born. Unlike your sun sign (the Sun's apparent yearly motion is about 1°/day), the Moon completes a full orbit around the Earth in an average of 27.3 days, moving about 13° per day and staying in a sign for only 2-3 days.

Because of this fast movement, even two people born on the same day can have different moon signs if their birth times differ — especially if the Moon changed signs on that day. If your birth time is unknown or uncertain, treat the result as only an approximate indication.

The calculation finds the Moon's true geocentric ecliptic longitude at your moment of birth; this value ranges from 0-360°, with each 30° segment corresponding to one zodiac sign (0-30° Aries, 30-60° Taurus, and so on).

How the calculation works

After computing the UTC time of your birth moment, the Moon's geocentric true ecliptic longitude at that instant is calculated. This value is derived from the Moon's position and velocity vectors (VSOP87/ELP-based series) and converted to the ecliptic of date using nutation and axial tilt corrections.

The calculation uses the open-source astronomy-engine library (MIT licensed, by Don Cross); per its documentation, the Moon's position has been compared against NOVAS and JPL Horizons reference data and shown sub-arcminute accuracy. As a further check, the Sun-Moon longitude difference has been tested to come out to approximately 0° and 180° at the moments of new moon and full moon respectively.

Why does the moon sign change so often?

Because the Moon completes a full orbit around the Earth in about 27.3 days, its position in the sky (on the ecliptic) advances by an average of 13° per day and it stays in a sign for only 2-3 days — unlike your sun sign, where the Sun stays in a sign for about a month.

Is the result reliable if I don't know my birth time?

If your birth day doesn't coincide with the day the Moon changed signs (i.e., your birthday falls in the middle of the Moon's stay in a sign), time uncertainty usually won't change the result. But if the Moon changed signs on your birth day, even a difference of a few hours can produce a different sign — the tool will show a warning in that case.

How accurate is the calculation?

The astronomy-engine library used for the Moon's position shows sub-arcminute (1/60°) deviation compared to reference sources like JPL Horizons — far more precise than what's needed to determine a sign (a 30° segment). The main source of uncertainty is the accuracy of the birth time and time zone you enter.
