Is the '8 glasses of water a day' rule true?
It's a memorable simplification, not a scientific requirement. Eight 250 ml glasses is 2 liters — about right for a 60 kg adult with light activity, too much for a small sedentary person, too little for a large or very active one. A weight-based estimate adapts to your body, which is why it is generally preferred.
Do coffee, tea and food count toward my water intake?
Yes. Roughly 20% of a typical day's fluid arrives through food, and caffeinated drinks still hydrate — the diuretic effect of normal coffee consumption is too small to cancel out the fluid they contain. Water is still the best default because it adds no calories or sugar.
Can I drink too much water?
Yes, though it's rare.
