Viking Name Generator

Last updated:

A Viking name should sound like it belongs to someone carved into a rune stone — short, strong first names paired with an epithet earned in battle or on a longship. This tool combines Old Norse-style first names (Bjorn, Ragnar, Astrid, Freya...) with optional epithets (Ironside, the Bold, Stormborn...) to generate full Viking names on demand.

What Is This Tool?

This tool pairs a first-name word bank (Old Norse-style names like Bjorn, Ragnar, Astrid, Freya) with an optional epithet word bank (Ironside, the Bold, Stormborn, Wolfheart) to generate full Viking names.

Switch between Male and Female using the gender selector, which draws first names from a dedicated bank tuned for each.

Most generated names include an epithet, giving you a mix of short base names and more elaborate full names in each batch.

Why Use It?

  • Get instant Viking name ideas for a D&D character, tabletop RPG campaign, or historical fiction story without staring at a blank page.
  • Useful for fan fiction, video game characters, or worldbuilding projects that need Norse-style names quickly.
  • Switch between Male and Female to match the character you're naming.
  • Generate as many batches as you like — there's no limit, so you can keep rolling until a name clicks.
  • 100% local: names are generated entirely in your browser, with nothing sent to a server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these real historical Viking names?

The first names are inspired by real Old Norse naming conventions, but the specific combinations with epithets are randomly generated and not pulled from historical records. Some first names (like Bjorn or Ragnar) do closely resemble names of real historical figures, though the combination itself is invented.

Can I generate a female Viking name?

Yes — switch the gender selector to Female, which draws first names from a separate word bank of Old Norse-style female names.

Will I get the same name twice?

Each batch of eight is generated to avoid duplicates within that batch, but different batches can occasionally repeat a name since the word banks are limited in size.

Does this generator save or track the names I copy?

No. Name generation and copying both happen entirely in your browser — nothing is sent to or stored on a server.

Can I use these names for a published story or game?

Yes, the generated names are free to use in your own creative work.
