The mile is an imperial/US customary distance unit equal to exactly 1,609.344 meters, still used on road signs and speedometers in the United States and the United Kingdom. The kilometer (1,000 meters) is the standard road-distance unit almost everywhere else.
There is also the nautical mile, a different unit used in shipping and aviation: 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km exactly, based on one minute of latitude. When a distance at sea is quoted in "miles", it almost always means nautical miles.
